While showcasing some of his works at AKKA Project Dubai in the group exhibition Contemporary Ethiopia (28.01 - 28.02.2023), Natnael Ashebir is taking part in a special residency program held by 32° East, Ugandan Arts Trust, an independent non-profit organisation focused on the creation and exploration of contemporary art in Uganda.
32° East is a home for creation, experimentation and critical thinking through contemporary art, based in the capital city of Uganda, Kampala. Since 2011, their mission has been to expand possibilities for art making in the African Continent through residencies, resource centre and public programming.
Their programme #32Residencies offers artists in residence and members, also coming from outside Uganda, one-on-one drop-in sessions for critique and professional development, workshops for practical skills and our regular discussion series, Artachat, for social engagement.
In 2021, after a long journey of fundraising, plot searching, design changing and more, 32° East started the first ever purpose built art centre in Kampala.
