AKKA Project is pleased to announce that the artist Cyrus Kabiru has been selected for the third edition of AKKA Project | Artist Residency Program - Venezia, from August 25th to October 31st, 2021.
Kabiru is a self-taught multi-disciplinary artist, known for his sculptural spectacles or C-Stunners, which are made of retrieved objects and recycled materials sourced on the streets of Nairobi. The design of his works embeds his vision of the future. Each C-Stunner is the product of an innovation process intimately linked to his life-story. Kabiru makes reference to both his home in Kenya and to international countries and cities that he travels to. His intricate sculptural works push the boundaries of conventional craftsmanship, sculpture, photography, design and fashion. Repurposed and reimagined using colorful utensils, wood, wires, bottle caps and other rejected items, the artist says this makes him feel like he’s helping the environment through recycling, as “a warrior of nature.”
Cyrus will have an enriching experience within the city of Venice and the Italian territory. This experience will create new points of encounter and interaction with the cultural heritage, the local and international art scene. Cyrus in fact will have the opportunity to work with artisans in Venice, using their material and expertise to create works that reflect both the atmosphere, culture, colors of Venice, and his particular, ironic and intriguing style.
