Louvre Abu Dhabi is currently showcasing the remarkable work of Mozambican artist Gonçalo Mabunda in its latest exhibition, Kings and Queens of Africa: Forms and Figures of Power. Mabunda’s piece, Fluctuating Throne, is now part of the museum’s permanent collection, further solidifying his impact on contemporary African art.
This groundbreaking exhibition, presented in collaboration with the Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, features over 350 works that explore the deep connection between art, power, and identity across the African continent. Spanning from the 11th to the 21st century, the collection highlights Africa’s rich artistic heritage through a diverse array of sculptures, thrones, masks, and other cultural artifacts.
Mabunda is renowned for transforming remnants of war - such as decommissioned weapons - into powerful artistic statements. His Fluctuating Throne embodies themes of resilience, transformation, and the reinterpretation of power structures, making it a significant addition to the exhibition.
Visitors to Louvre Abu Dhabi can experience Kings and Queens of Africa: Forms and Figures of Power until May 25th, 2025. This extraordinary showcase offers a profound insight into African traditions, leadership symbols, and the enduring influence of artistic expression across centuries.
