Fowskow Moments by Michael Hailu

AKKA Project is proud to present Fowskow Moments, a deeply introspective and visually compelling body of work by Ethiopian artist Michael Hailu. This exhibition showcases Hailu’s mastery of watercolor painting, through which he explores themes of identity, interconnectedness, and the dualities that define human existence.

Hailu’s artistic philosophy is deeply rooted in the African concept of Ubuntu, the belief that "I am because we are". This ethos informs his approach to both art and life, shaping his creative process as an act of surrender - where the self dissolves into the work, and art becomes a conduit for peace, transformation, and shared prosperity. The name Fowskow originates from Hailu’s childhood, a term used among neighborhood children that embodies a profound communal spirit. This philosophy is reflected in his art, which highlights the inherent significance of all things. His portraits, inspired by the dual colors associated with King Solomon, capture the contrasts of life: good and evil, darkness and light, joy and sorrow. These opposing forces serve as metaphors for the complexity of human experience, urging viewers to reflect on the delicate balance that shapes our world.

Hailu's creative process remains fluid and intuitive, allowing each piece to evolve organically beyond his conscious control. It is a dynamic dialogue between the physical and the unseen, between material and spirit, between the artist and the greater forces that influence existence.

The exhibition Fowskow Moments will be open from March 1 to March 31, 2025, at AKKA Project Venice. Two special events will be held at the venue:

Fowskow Moments is more than an exhibition - it is an invitation to engage with a philosophy that transcends borders, connecting us all through art, history, and shared humanity.
