Step into Anchoringsickness, the evocative solo exhibition by the artist Beau Disundi Nzazi (b. 1993, DRC), running from November 23 to December 8, 2024, at AKKA Project Venice. This dynamic showcase features works crafted during his residency, inviting viewers to explore the complex interplay between identity, colonial history, and the structures that both ground and destabilize us.
At the heart of Disundi’s work is the image of makayabu, a dried cod introduced to the Congo by colonizers, symbolizing the dual themes of survival and domination. Through his works made from makayabu cartons, metal grids, and salvaged materials, he reassembles fragments of history and culture, questioning how colonial legacies continue to shape our identities today, both at a personal and at a global level.
Set against the backdrop of Venice, a city of both resilience and fragility, as Beau came to define it, Anchoringsickness challenges visitors to engage with the discomfort of historical past. Disundi’s art compels us to reflect on how the echoes of colonialism and shifting cultural identities continue to influence our lives, urging us to navigate the delicate balance between being anchored and unmoored in our ever-changing world.
Don’t miss this chance to experience a thought-provoking journey through the forces that shape our existence!
