Filipe Branquinho Mozambique, b. 1977
65 x 65 x 3.5 cm framed
In his latest body of works, Filipe Branquinho fearlessly tackles the complexities of "blackness" and the narrative of "back to black". In fact, it is worth noting that the title itself, "B(L)ACK", is a clever and deliberate play on words. With a masterful use of language, Branquinho addresses two distinct meanings: on one hand, "B(L)ACK" references the color black, symbolizing black people and their culture, creating a powerful exploration of blackness; on the other hand, the title also alludes to the phrase "back to black", evoking a narrative of returning to one's roots, reclaiming identity, and rediscovering the essence of African culture. This brilliant word joke further enhances the layers of meaning within the artworks, inviting the audience to unravel the intricate nuances and engage with the profound reflections on blackness, culture, and contemporary society.
