Osaru Obaseki Nigeria, b. 1993
The painting "Emergency" is born out of the artist's profound curiosity regarding how Venetians navigate and cope with emergencies. Upon her initial visit to Venice, Osaru found herself pondering the intricacies of life amidst the waterways: the logistics of reaching a hospital by boat, the inherent risks of falling into the water and potentially drowning. These questions, sparked by their first-hand experience, led Osaru to delve deeper into the concept of emergency within the context of Venice. The notion of emergency in fact is also intricately tied to the city's fragility. The polluted waters of the lagoon and the relentless erosion of the ancient buildings by the frequent waves serve as poignant reminders of Venice's vulnerability. As Osaru explores these themes on canvas, she invites viewers to contemplate the broader implications of emergency response in a city as unique and delicate as Venice. The painting serves as a catalyst for reflection on the interconnectedness of environmental sustainability, urban resilience, and cultural heritage preservation in the face of imminent threats.
