Cecilia Lamptey-Botchway is a US-based Ghanaian mixed media artist specializing in figurative painting, performance, abstractism, and textile making. Her work explores themes of gender roles, womanhood, and societal challenges, particularly those faced by African women.
Born into a family of painters and textile designers, Cecilia was immersed in artistic traditions from an early age. She grew up learning batik, textile making, and design, skills that continue to influence her practice. Her imaginative approach incorporates traditional motifs, which she skillfully integrates into the backgrounds of her portraits.
She studied at the Yaba School of Art, Design, and Textiles at Yaba College of Technology in Lagos, Nigeria (2012–2015), refining her craft and deepening her artistic vision. In 2021–2022, she was selected as a fellow at the Nubuke Foundation’s Young Ghanaian Artists (YGA) residency.
Cecilia has exhibited internationally at prestigious fairs and exhibitions, including Art X Lagos, Arco Lisboa, AKAA Paris, and Focus Art Fair New York. She is known for her innovative use of upcycled mopping wool fibers, creating textured portraits that highlight the resilience and versatility of contemporary African women. Through her dynamic and emotive works, she addresses outdated gender norms while embracing heritage, sustainability, and the evolving nature of womanhood.
