The Punu were originally part of theLuango kingdom of Angola. The Punu migrated northwards during the 18th Century and settled in the Upper Ngoume River (Gabon) which they continue to inhabit to this day. Not much is historically known about the Punu, whose art forms strongly suggest that much has been lost of what was once a great people. Punu masks represent idealized female ancestors' faces. The white color of themask is genderless; white is a symbol forpeace, deities, spirits of the dead, andthe afterlife.
