Tega Tafadzwa | Zimbabwe
“You can’t have culture if you don’t have cultivation, but the first thing you have to cultivate isn’t the view, but the viewing”
Tafadzwa Tega was born in 1985 in Harare, Zimbabwe, and he currently lives and works in South Africa.
Through his youth, he was surrounded by artists (directly his father and his relatives) so since he was young, he used to paint and draw some images from his unconcious.
Tega studied at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, where he first exhibited his paintings.
His artistic career started when he was 10 and his portraits are capable of resurfacing lost identities and symbols of ancient stories, combining physical reality with the metaphysical. The powerful use of color recalls contemporary virtual and psychedelic reality..
Since 2012 he has shown his solo work in several galleries in South Africa. Tega’s works can also be found in several institutional and private collections, including Gervanne and Matthias Leridon Collection, Spier Arts Trust and the University of Cape Town (UCT). His works have been presented several times at the FNB Joburg (2018-2020) and Cape Town Investec art fairs (2020).
