Tania Babb | South Africa

“This vitality may very well be a subjective experience but I do see evidence of this in creativity, particularly ceramics.”

Tania Babb was born in Zimbabwe in 1967 and currently lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa.

She graduated in Graphic Design from Ruth Prowse School of Art, Cape Town, South Africa in 1985 and subsequently worked as a sculptural apprentice. She also completed the Ceramic and Life Drawing course at the Surrey Institute, UK in 1988.

Her work analyzes people and their relationships — to each other, to themselves and to other important things or moments in their lives. Tania likes to capture fleeting moments in clay, where a gesture reveals the depth and nature of these relationships.

Tania prefers to work in buttery porcelain which she feels has the feeling of human flesh, with all the vulnerability that being human implies.

Each piece is handmade. Tania does not use moulds, therefore each sculpture is an original work of art, even though the motifs and themes which characterise her art echo through the collection.
