Nothando Chiwanga | Zimbabwe
Nothando Chiwanga was born in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1997, and lives and works in Harare, Zimbabwe. She studied at the National Gallery School of Visual Arts and Design and is currently an artist in residence at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
Nothando Chiwanga work is deeply influenced by personal experiences, while reflecting on womanhood. She addresses themes such as education, food, bereavement ,home tools and traditions. She uses her body as a medium of memory and fiction to reveal the complex world of young womanhood in a changing society where traditional values are hanging by a thread and changing to become more relevant to the times . Her portraiture images display an expressionist, performative act and a vivid elaborate use of light , pose , and environment. Chiwanga’s works in photography and performance showing an undeniable sense of realism . Her work documents and explores perception, womanhood as a political position and change.
She has participated in various workshops like Realism by John Kotze, Art ethics by Julius Mushambadope and Performance Art by Sithembile Msezane.
