Ngula Kiire Yusuf | Uganda

“I have a strong belief that art talks and hence I can express myself through art”

Ngula Kiire Yusuf  was born in 1986 in Kampala, Uganda where he currently lives and works. He is a self-taught artist who has been professionally painting since 2008.
His practice is moved by a tremendous ambition to impact society and employs psychological tools with the purpose of challenging the viewers and triggering their curiosity. His preferred medium is oil painting and he uses it to create realistic images that conceal a cultural investigation. Ngula uses society as his faithful guide through his intellectual investigation borrowing inspirations from the 90s TV shows, church confessions, social reforms, economy and politics.

Overtime he has learned how to drape hard realities in attractive creative visual rhetorics by the use of animals as a metaphor to demystify analogies of human’s life. His work seeks a form of self-reflection in the viewer that originates from the mirroring into the animals’ pictures, that are turned by the artist into representatives of the human dilemma. His collection is a search for an inner genuine being.  Demonstrating a great passion and commitment, his career is marked by a series of awards. Ngula won the Best young artist at the prestigious Tulifanya gallery which reflects how he came to work with profound artists, art collectives and art studios like Njovu Art Studio, Angavu art studio, Gecko art studio and artists like Damba musoke, Damulira shira, kassi mark,Birungi arnold, lukwago Saad, kasagga , Juuko Hoods, Anwar Sadat, Kintu Paul and Tindi.

Ngula’s practice has been shown in and outside of Uganda in both solo and group exhibitions. He’s has exhibited at Tulifanya Art Gallery, Nommo Art Gallery, Mish Mash, US embassy Kampala, Umoja Art Gallery and Afriart Gallery in Uganda, Diani Art Gallery, Banana Hill Gallery, Bonzo Art Gallery, The Art Space in Kenya and at The Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam.
