“I am curious about the public spaces and the dynamics of human conduct, there remain unanswered questions about actions and observable emotions associated with individuals, particular societies, cultures as well as the human race as a whole.”
Lemek Tompoika was born in 1988 in Kajiado, Kenya and currently lives and works in Nairobi.
He attended an Art and Drawing course at the Creative Art College, Nairobi in 2005.
In 2013 he took up a studio at Kuona Trust, Centre for Visual Arts to begin a full-time art practice. Lemek has participated in biennials in Europe, held joint shows and showed in several group exhibitions.
Using charcoal, pastel and graphite on paper, the artist represents commonplaces, human figures and ideas of consumerism as he has observed and experienced, mostly speaking to issues of religion and traditions in the society.
